Wisdom teeth are the molars that grow at the backmost portion of your mouth when you reach adulthood. If you’re unlucky, they can grow crooked, sideways, impacted, or otherwise misaligned. This misalignment can cause many complications for your oral health, and the most common solution is to have them removed.
At Coast Family Dental, we may recommend wisdom teeth removal to a patient if they:
Cause Oral Pain and Sensitivity
The most common symptom of impacted wisdom teeth is oral pain, which is why we don’t recommend ignoring any toothache, gum sensitivity, or throbbing sensations around your mouth. The sooner you get it treated by your dentist, the better you can avoid more painful and expensive complications.
Misalign Nearby Teeth
Sometimes, wisdom teeth can force the rest of your permanent teeth to shift and cause misalignment. This shift leads to bite problems, overcrowding, and pain, making it challenging to maintain good oral hygiene. When left untreated, you may also have to undergo additional procedures to realign your original teeth.
Damage the Jaw
Wisdom teeth can grow impacted in your jaw, which can shift other teeth and even the jawline. This problem can limit your mouth movement and cause pain when doing so. Cysts may also form around your newly erupted molars and damage your jawbone and surrounding nerves.
Infected Gum Tissue
Wisdom teeth complications may also affect surrounding gums. When they erupt at an odd angle against other teeth, it creates excess pressure on the gums and causes irritation. Over time, the gums will swell and become painful, which makes them hard to clean properly.
