Children & Teen’s Orthodontics

Children and Teen Orthodontics Sunshine Coast

At Coast Family Dental we offer a comprehensive, balanced and full range of orthodontic treatment options for your child. We do not subscribe to the ‘one size fits all’ treatment modality and believe each orthodontic treatment option has its merits when selected for the appropriate case.

Early Intervention Orthodontics

The aim of early intervention orthodontics is to correct an issue with jaw and/or teeth alignment before it becomes more difficult to treat during adolescence and adulthood. We generally recommend a consultation at the age of 3-4 and once more at the age of 6-7 years so that any issues can be addressed in time.

Early intervention may include the use of fixed or removable appliances to correct:

1) Narrow Dental Arches

2) Crossbites

3) Crowding issues due to an early loss of baby teeth

4) As a measure to restrict certain oral habits such as finger or thumb sucking which are known to cause open bites and cross bites.

5) To improve airway function

In some patients jaw and/or teeth alignment issues can be associated with airways problems which in itself can present as night time bed wetting, snoring, tooth grinding and/or mouth breathing in younger children.

Mouth-breathing is generally caused by enlarged adenoid and tonsils and/or upper respiratory issues such as developmental issues of the nasal passages or blockages caused by allergies and obstructions. Where appropriate the team at Coast Family Dental may refer your child to an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist if we believe there is an airway issue. We will then work alongside your ENT and develop a plan to correct their mouth breathing habit. This could involve expansion of the upper jaw and may be beneficial in improving breathing through the nose while also addressing a crowded, narrow mouth.

Traditional Braces

Traditional braces or metal braces are bonded to each tooth with an adhesive. Braces are connected by a wire which exerts a continual force on each bracket thereby moving teeth. Braces need to be adjusted every 4-8 weeks to ensure teeth are moving into their correct position. These adjustments can cause some mild discomfort and can make teeth feel a bit tender for the first few days following an adjustment. This usually subsides after each adjustment.

Clear/Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces use transparent or clear brackets and are less visible than metal braces. Ceramic braces work just as well as metal braces and can be an ideal option for teens.

Clear Aligners

Trust your dental professional to properly examine, diagnose and guide you during your clear aligner journey.

At Coast Family Dental we utilise a range of well known, branded aligner systems. Teeth do not always move according to a computer generated plan. Patients do need regular visits to their dental professional every 4-8 weeks to ensure teeth are moving into the correct position. You may need to be rescanned and new aligners issued if teeth are not moving according to plan.

Clear aligners utilise a sequence of near invisible trays/aligners which are worn for approximately 22 hours per day. They need to be removed prior to eating and drinking (except for water). Compliance is a key factor for success of treatment. If you do not believe your child will be compliant with clear aligners then treatment timeframes will become protracted and results will be less than desirable. If compliance is a concern, then rest assured the team at Coast Family Dental can offer an alternative treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is orthodontic treatment for children and teens?

Orthodontic treatment helps guide the development and alignment of teeth and jaws as children grow. It can address concerns such as crowded teeth, gaps, bite issues, and jaw alignment to support both function and appearance.

At what age should my child see an orthodontic dentist?

Many children benefit from an orthodontic assessment around the age of 7, even if treatment is not needed straight away. Early assessment allows potential issues to be identified and monitored while the jaw is still developing.

What are the signs my child may need orthodontic treatment?

Common signs include crowded or crooked teeth, difficulty biting or chewing, mouth breathing, thumb sucking habits, or teeth that don’t meet properly. If you have concerns about your child’s smile or bite, our team can assess their orthodontic needs.

What orthodontic treatment options are available for kids and teens?

Treatment options may include traditional braces, clear braces, or clear aligners depending on the child’s age and orthodontic requirements. We’ll recommend the most suitable option based on their individual needs and lifestyle.

How long does orthodontic treatment usually take?

Treatment time can vary depending on the complexity of the case and the type of treatment used. Many orthodontic treatments for children and teens range from 12 months to several years.

Will braces or aligners affect my child’s daily activities?

Most children and teens adapt very quickly to orthodontic treatment and can continue with school, sports, and everyday activities as normal. Some minor adjustments to eating habits and oral hygiene routines may be needed.

Is orthodontic treatment painful?

Children and teens may experience mild pressure or discomfort when braces or aligners are first fitted or adjusted. This is usually temporary and settles within a few days.

Why is early orthodontic treatment important?

Early orthodontic treatment can help guide jaw growth, create space for developing teeth, and reduce the risk of more complex dental problems later on. In some cases, early intervention may simplify future treatment needs.
