Traditional Braces

Traditional braces or metal braces are bonded to each tooth with an adhesive. Braces are connected by a wire which exerts a continual force on each bracket thereby moving teeth. Braces need to be adjusted every 4-8 weeks to ensure teeth are moving into their correct position. These adjustments can cause some mild discomfort and can make teeth feel a bit tender for the first few days following an adjustment. This usually subsides after each adjustment.

Clear/Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces use transparent or clear brackets and are less visible than metal braces. Ceramic braces work just as well as metal braces and can be an ideal option for adults.

Clear Aligners

Trust your dental professional to properly examine, diagnose and guide you during your clear aligner journey.

At Coast Family Dental we utilise a range of well known, branded aligner systems. Teeth do not always move according to a computer generated plan. Patients do need regular visits to their dental professional every 4-8 weeks to ensure teeth are moving into the correct position. You may need to be rescanned and new aligners issued if teeth are not moving according to plan.

Clear aligners utilise a sequence of near invisible trays/aligners which are worn for approximately 22 hours per day. They need to be removed prior to eating and drinking (except for water). Compliance is a key factor for success of treatment. If you do not believe you will be compliant with clear aligners then treatment timeframes will become prolonged and results will be less than desirable. If compliance is a concern, then rest assured the team at Coast Family Dental can offer an alternative treatment option.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is adult orthodontic treatment?

Adult orthodontics focuses on straightening teeth and improving bite alignment for patients after their teenage years. It can help with crowding, gaps, bite issues, and overall smile aesthetics. Treatment can also support better long-term oral health.

Am I too old for braces or aligners?

No, you are never too old for orthodontic treatment. Many adults choose braces or clear aligners to improve their smile and function later in life. As long as your teeth and gums are healthy, treatment is often suitable.

What treatment options are available for adults?

Common options include traditional braces, ceramic (clear) braces, and clear aligners. Each option has different benefits depending on your lifestyle, dental needs, and treatment goals. Your dentist will help recommend the most suitable choice.

How long does adult orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment time varies depending on the complexity of your case. On average, it can range from several months to a couple of years. Your dentist will give you a clearer timeline after an initial assessment.

Is orthodontic treatment painful?

You may experience mild discomfort or pressure when treatment begins or after adjustments. This is normal and usually settles within a few days. Most patients find it manageable and well worth the end result.

Do I need a referral to start orthodontic treatment?

No referral is needed. You can book a consultation directly with Coast Family Dental to discuss your concerns and treatment options. We’ll assess your teeth and guide you through the next steps.

Can I still work and live normally during treatment?

Yes, most adults continue their normal daily routine during orthodontic treatment. Clear aligners are particularly discreet and removable, while braces may require a short adjustment period. Our team will help you choose an option that fits your lifestyle.

Will I need to wear a retainer after treatment?

Yes, retainers are an important part of maintaining your results. They help keep your teeth in their new position after treatment is complete. Your dentist will explain how and when to wear them.
