Happy Gas

Happy Gas | Happy Gas for Anxious Patients

Many individuals across the Sunshine Coast have a common trait: they fear the dentist. Despite advancements in dentistry making the process faster and gentler, a large percentage of people still experience light to moderate anxiety when faced with the prospect of sitting in the dental chair.

Happy Gas Dentistry | Anxious Patients

Kiss anxiety and nerves goodbye by requesting “happy gas”, otherwise known as “laughing gas”, or by it’s scientific name, “nitrous oxide”.

This gas provides our patients with a feeling of relaxation, calm and euphoria, transforming an otherwise nerve-wracking experience into one that is pleasant and enjoyable.

Other benefits of happy gas include it’s unique ability to dull the senses of hearing, touch, and yes, pain. Best of all, the procedure is simple and safe to administer, with the patient inhaling a mixed blend of oxygen and nitrous oxide prior to and throughout the procedure.

Process of Happy Gas

The process of administering happy gas begins by placing a small nasal inhaler gently onto the patient’s face, covering the nose. The gas and oxygen mixture is turned on and the patient breathes in and out normally. From the time of inhalation, happy gas generally takes around 3 minutes to take effect, after which the patient will feel carefree, relaxed and happy (hence the name).

When necessary, local anaesthetic may also be administered to increase comfort and eliminate any pain involved with the procedure.

Unlike sleep dentistry where you are unconscious for the procedure, nitrous oxide allows you to remain awake, yet comfortable. Because of this, the dentist can communicate with you throughout the procedure, making sure you are comfortable with every step along the way.

Does Nitrous Oxide Have Any Side Effects?

Nitrous oxide is generally considered quite safe. However, as with any medication or procedure, there is the potential for side effects. For example, some patients feel a bit cloudy/groggy afterword. Others may feel a little nausea. That said, side effects are typically absent to mild in nature and tolerated well.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is happy gas?

Happy gas, also known as nitrous oxide, is a gentle sedative inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose during dental treatment. It helps you feel calm, relaxed, and less anxious while staying fully awake and aware throughout your appointment.

Who is happy gas suitable for?

It’s often recommended for patients who feel nervous about dental treatment, have a sensitive gag reflex, or find it difficult to sit still in the chair. It can be used for both adults and children to help make dental visits more comfortable.

How does happy gas make me feel?

Most patients describe feeling light, relaxed, and at ease, with reduced anxiety and discomfort. The effects begin within a few minutes of breathing the gas and wear off quickly once it is stopped.

Is happy gas safe?

Yes, nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for many years and is considered very safe when administered by trained professionals. It is carefully controlled throughout your appointment to ensure your comfort and wellbeing.

Will I be asleep during treatment?

No, you will remain awake and able to communicate with your dentist at all times. Happy gas simply helps take the edge off anxiety so treatment feels more manageable.

How quickly does it wear off?

The effects wear off within minutes after the mask is removed and normal oxygen is given. Most patients feel back to normal shortly after their appointment and can usually continue their day as usual.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are uncommon but may include mild dizziness, nausea, or a light-headed feeling. These effects are usually short-lived and resolve quickly after treatment ends.

Can I drive after having happy gas?

Yes, most patients are able to drive and return to normal activities shortly after their appointment once the effects have fully worn off. Your dentist will confirm when it is safe for you to leave.
